ZX81 Motherboard Development
Carl and Ingo are collaborating on a new TS1000 motherboard — Carl designed the board while Ingo is bringing it up one module at a time, currently troubleshooting video output. The board can be built in different configurations, from a minimal bare-bones version to one with community upgrades like MODs and Wi-Fi, serving both purists and enthusiasts wanting modern enhancements.
Keyboard and Keycap Projects
A significant portion of the meeting focused on custom keycaps and keyboards. Ingo demonstrated UV printing techniques for applying legends to keycaps and shared 3D-printed prototypes for the ZX81. The group explored options for the 2068 and Spectrum keyboards, including low-profile switches and modified PCB mounting. Cost, readability, and respect for original designs were key considerations. Carl recommended starting with standard keycaps for affordability. The group also reviewed TS-1000 keycap spacing and agreed there’s sufficient room for all legends including color markings. Joe provided technical background on vintage capacitive keyboard technology, and Ryan raised questions about adapting vintage keys to modern hardware.
Vintage Cases and Accessories
David presented a rare Timex computer carrying case from the 1980s, with only 2,000 produced. The group examined various period briefcases and accessories, discussing ergonomic challenges and desk setups required by early computers. 3D printing textured cases was explored as a modern alternative.
TS-Pico and Emulator Development
Ryan and Ricardo are finalizing bug fixes for the TS-Pico project, including issues with unofficial DCK image handling. Stuart is seeking beta testers for a USB keyboard designed for ZX81 and TS-2068 emulators, with key repeat and scanning compatibility under evaluation.
