Navy is Battleship against the computer. You place your ships on a 10×10 grid, giving horizontal and vertical coordinates from 0 to 9 and choosing whether each ship lies horizontally or vertically; the computer then places its own fleet and asks whether you want to play first. Two boards are shown, one with your ships and one recording your shots, with a red X for a hit and a blue X for a miss. The computer comments on each shot and on the result at the end.

Navy was written by Kristian Boisvert and published on the December 1986 – January 1987 tape of Byte Power (©1987).

Program Analysis

The BASIC is a loader for the 12,017-byte machine code block at 53471. Line 2 loads it and, if PEEK 23681 is 0, lists the save line instead of running. Line 5 does CLEAR 65367, line 10 points the character set at 53215 with POKE 23606,223: POKE 23607,207, line 20 sets the UDG pointer to 65368, and line 30 starts the game with RANDOMIZE USR 54239. Line 40, PRINT USR 0, resets the computer when the game returns.

Notable Techniques

  • The CHARS value of 53215 makes character 32 start at 53471, the first byte of the loaded block, so the block begins with its own font.
