** JACK’S FAIRWARE **

FAIRWARE is my word for SHAREWARE, which is CONDITIONAL public-domain user-supported software that is NOT exactly free. FAIRWARE costs whatever the USER feels is a fair price for what he or she received.

FAIRWARE may be freely copied and shared, unless it is COPYRIGHTED. A recipient should always consider sending the author a donation, no matter how the Fairware was acquired.

FAIRWARE is COPYRIGHTED if it’s a modification to a commercially copyrighted program and is provided only as part of that program. For example, Customized Mscript is copyrighted because stock Mscript is copyrighted. My enhancements to Mscript are so complex that they cannot be provided as a separate package. My enhancements are FAIRWARE, but Mscript itself is NOT.

THE MAIN IDEA behind Fairware is that support is a two-way street: user and author should support each other, for their mutual benefit.

FAIRWARE differs from unconditional public-domain software in several ways:

1. The author offers support to individual users. This is not usually the case with public-domain software.

2. The user is expected to pay the software author a donation both for the work of writing the software, and for any time the author spends in dealing with individual problems, either on the phone or in answering letters or in “custom programming”. The donation amount may be suggested by the author, but is generally left up to the user.

3. Copyrighted Fairware may be shared ONLY with people who have already purchased legal copies of the original copyrighted software. The legality of this may be questionable. What I’m saying is: it’s OK with me, and up to you.

4. Non-copyrighted Fairware may be shared with anyone on a non-commercial basis, provided that you include copies of all documentation AND inform the recipient that a donation to the author is expected, if the recipient likes and uses the Fairware.

5. Fairware should NOT be put on a BBS or be published in magazines without the specific permission of the author. Such actions tend to place the software in the public domain.

6. Please let the author know of any significant modifications you make to the Fairware.

JACK’S FAIRWARE

FACTORS TO CONSIDER WHEN SENDING A DONATION:

-Your own financial condition
-My time & costs of copying & mailing documentation & tape etc
-Complexity, quality and usefulness of the software or support

FAIRWARE AUTHORSHIP: Some fairware originated in British magazines, from whence I typed it in (hours of work), got it working (more hours) and then adapted it for 2068 (more hours).

Other fairware was written by myself or by others. If by others, it is included in the FAIRWARE catalog with permission, and donations received for the work of authorship will be forwarded to the author. Support is provided either by myself or by the original author.

SUPPORT: Ideally, a program should be so well written and so well documented that no support by the author is ever needed. But in the real world, support is often needed either because the user is a beginner or because the user has other software or equipment with which the author’s software is incompatible.

There are SO MANY different peripherals and accessories available for the 2068 that it’s very difficult to write software that’s compatible with everything a user may own.

THE FAIRWARE CATALOG is a list (and brief description) of currently-available Fairware. The latest catalog will be sent upon request; SASE please.

A mailing to everyone on my mailing list will ONLY be done when a significant number of changes have accrued since the last mailing. When you receive a catalog in such a mailing, please send me a dollar to help with the copying/mailing costs, and to let me know that you want to remain on my active mailing list.

THE CATALOG DESCRIPTIONS are very brief. If you are curious as to whether something may be useful to you, just go ahead and order it. If you find it is NOT useful to you, DON’T pay for it. (But do pay for the cassette/mailing, or return the cassette). Generally it’s best if you order several programs at once.

WHEN ORDERING FAIRWARE, please describe your system fully, so I can be sure to send what you need. The FAIRWARE ORDER BLANK is useful for describing your system.
